Who Needs a License

Any person engaged in electrical contracting, installation, alteration, or repair of electrical systems in North Miami Beach must hold a valid Florida electrical contractor license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" is defined as a person who undertakes to, offers to, or does construct, supervise construction, alter, supervise alteration, repair, supervise repair, add to, subtract from, improve, move, or wreck any electrical system. How to Get Licensed

  2. Document four years of full-time work experience in the electrical trade within the ten years preceding application, OR
  3. Provide documentation of completion of an accredited electrical training program plus three years of documented work experience

  4. Obtain military credit (if applicable): Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for relevant military training and education toward work experience requirements

  5. Pass the state licensing exam administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board

  6. Apply with the state through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Submit proof of experience, exam passage, and application fees

  7. Obtain local authorization before performing work in North Miami Beach (see Local Requirements)
