Electrical Licensing in North Miami, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who engages in electrical work in North Miami must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" means any person who undertakes, offers to undertake, purports to have the ability to undertake, or submits a bid to undertake electrical installation, maintenance, or repair work. This includes wiring buildings, installing fixtures, and performing related electrical work. A license is required regardless of whether the work is performed by the contractor or by employees on their behalf.
How to Get Licensed
Electrical licensing in Florida is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). To become licensed:
-
Determine your classification. Florida issues licenses for Electrical Contractor, Electrical Apprentice, or Electrical Journeyman classifications.
-
Meet experience requirements. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must have a specified amount of practical experience in electrical work. Experience requirements vary by classification and are set by rule.
-
Pass the examination. You must pass the DBPR-administered licensing examination for your classification.
-
Submit your application. Apply directly through the DBPR (not through North Miami). Include proof of experience, examination passing scores, and required fees.
-
Credit for military training. If applicable, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for relevant military training and education toward experience requirements.
Complete current requirements and application procedures are available through the DBPR website.
Local Requirements
Electrical work in North Miami requires a permit from the Miami-Dade County Building Department, which has jurisdiction over construction permitting in North Miami. Before beginning electrical work, you must obtain a building permit specific to your project.
The North Miami Municipal Code may contain local amendments, additional restrictions, or specific requirements for electrical work within city limits. Contractors should review the North Miami Municipal Code for any local provisions that apply to electrical contracting in the city.
Contact the Miami-Dade County Building Department to determine permit requirements and procedures for your specific electrical project.
