Electrical Licensing in South Miami, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs electrical work in South Miami must hold a license issued by the State of Florida. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" includes the installation, repair, maintenance, or alteration of electrical equipment, wiring, appliances, and systems in buildings and structures. This includes both new construction and service work on existing systems.

Unlicensed electrical work is prohibited and subject to penalties.

How to Get Licensed

Electrical licensing in Florida is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must satisfy one of the following:
- Complete a formal apprenticeship program and pass the state exam, or
- Provide evidence of equivalent electrical experience (typically four years in the trade)

Step 2: Apply for Licensure
Submit your application to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The application requires proof of experience, educational credentials, and passing scores on the state licensing examination.

Step 3: Pass the Exam
You must pass the Florida Electrical Contractor Exam administered by DBPR. The exam tests knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), Florida Statutes, and safe electrical practices.

Step 4: Obtain Your License
Once approved, your license is valid statewide, including in South Miami.

Military Service Credit
If you have relevant military training or education in electrical work, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows you to receive credit toward licensing requirements. Apply this credit when submitting your experience documentation.

Local Requirements

In South Miami, electrical work requires a permit from the City of South Miami Building Department. You must obtain this permit before beginning any electrical work, regardless of state licensure.

The South Miami Municipal Code governs local permitting and inspection requirements. Review the South Miami Municipal Code for specific local amendments, inspection procedures, and permit fees that may apply in addition to state law.

Contact the South Miami Building Department for current permit applications, fees, and inspection scheduling.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensing requirements, including:
- Routine maintenance and minor repairs by property owners on their own property
- Work performed by employees of utilities (electric cooperatives, municipal utilities)
- Installation of low-voltage systems (under 50 volts) in specific applications

However, these exemptions are narrowly defined. Verify your work falls within an exemption before proceeding without a license.
