Electrical Licensing in South Miami Heights CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who performs electrical work in South Miami Heights must hold a valid Florida electrical contractor license unless exempt. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" means a person who undertakes to, offers to, or does construct, reconstruct, alter, enlarge, repair, improve, move, or maintain electrical systems. This includes installation of wiring, equipment, and apparatus for generation, transmission, transformation, delivery, and end use of electrical energy.
Work requiring a license includes new installations, rewiring, fixture replacement, and system modifications. Single-pole switch or outlet replacement by a property owner on their own residential property may be exempt, but most commercial and multi-unit work requires licensure.
How to Get Licensed
- Meet Qualifications: Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must demonstrate competency through one of these routes:
- Five years of experience as a registered or licensed electrical contractor in Florida, or
- Four years of experience in Florida plus completion of a specific classroom hours requirement, or

Equivalent experience and training recognized by the Construction Industry Licensing Board

Obtain Military Credit (if applicable): Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for relevant military electrical training and education toward experience requirements.

Apply to the State: Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The Board administers contractor licensing statewide.

Pass the Exam: You must pass the Florida electrical contractor licensing examination covering trade knowledge and Florida construction law.

Maintain Your License: Licenses require renewal and continuing education compliance per state regulations.
Local Requirements
