Engineering Licensing in South Miami Heights CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Florida law regulates persons who offer to provide or provide engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" refers to professional services requiring the application of engineering principles and data to public and private projects.
If you perform engineering work in South Miami Heights—including design, analysis, consultation, or oversight of construction—you must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board, unless you qualify for a statutory exemption.
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Meet Education and Experience Requirements
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent, AND
- Complete four years of progressive experience in engineering work under a licensed Professional Engineer, OR
- Meet alternative combinations of education and experience as specified in the statute.
Step 2: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam
This is the initial examination requirement.
Step 3: Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) Exam
After meeting experience requirements, pass the PE exam in your engineering discipline.
Step 4: Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board
Submit your application, official transcripts, experience verification, exam results, and required fees to the Construction Industry Licensing Board per Fla. Stat. § 489.107.
Military applicants: Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for relevant military training and education toward experience and education requirements. Submit documentation of military service with your application.
Local Requirements
