Who Needs a License

How to Get Licensed

Electrical licensing in Florida is issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The process requires:

  1. Apply through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) — the state board that oversees CILB operations.

  2. Meet experience requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.113 — typically 4 years of practical experience as an electrical apprentice or journeyman for a journeyman electrician license, or documented electrical contracting experience for a contractor license.

  3. Pass the state licensing exam — administered by testing vendors approved by DBPR. The exam covers electrical code, safety, and installation standards.

  4. Submit proof of experience and education — documented work history, apprenticeship records, or relevant coursework.

  5. Pay the state licensing fee — currently set by DBPR (subject to change).

Veterans with relevant military electrical training may receive credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
