Electrical Licensing in The Crossings CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who contracts to perform electrical work in The Crossings CDP must be licensed under Florida law. Electrical contracting is regulated work under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, which defines the scope of activities requiring licensure. This includes the installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures.
How to Get Licensed
Florida issues electrical contractor licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:
-
Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires documented competency through examination and relevant work experience.
-
Submit application to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Division of Construction Industries. The board administers licensing exams and maintains the roster of active licenses.
-
Pass the electrical contractor exam, which tests knowledge of electrical codes, safety standards, and installation practices.
-
Provide proof of experience as specified in § 489.113—typically documentation of years working in the electrical trade under a licensed contractor.
-
Military credit: If you have relevant military training in electrical work, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 permits credit toward experience requirements. Submit documentation with your application.
The DBPR Division of Construction Industries handles all state licensing. Contact them directly for current exam schedules, fees, and application procedures.
Local Requirements
Permit Authority: In The Crossings CDP, electrical work permits are issued by the Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (DRER), as The Crossings is an unincorporated area.
Municipal Code: Review The Crossings Municipal Code for any local amendments, permit requirements, or administrative procedures that supplement state licensing law. Local code may specify additional submission requirements, inspection protocols, or fees.
Permit Application: Before beginning electrical work, obtain a construction permit from the county. Proof of active state licensure is required to pull permits.
Exemptions
Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensure requirements:
- Homeowners performing electrical work on their own primary residence (not for sale or rent)
- Maintenance and repair performed by a property manager on property they own or manage, limited to non-structural systems
- Work performed by employees of licensed contractors under direct supervision
- Specific utility and railroad work
Exemptions are narrowly construed. When in doubt, obtain a license before contracting for electrical services.
