Engineering Licensing in The Crossings CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Florida law regulates the practice of engineering as a trade within the construction industry. Work that constitutes the "practice of engineering" and affects public safety, health, or welfare requires licensure under Fla. Stat. § 489.105. This includes designing structures, systems, or facilities; preparing engineering plans and specifications; and providing professional engineering services.
Not all construction-related work requires an engineer's license. Tasks performed by unlicensed workers under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer, or work falling within statutory exemptions, do not trigger licensing requirements. Specific exemptions are detailed below.
How to Get Licensed
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, administers engineering licenses. To become licensed:
- Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires:
- A combination of education and experience in engineering
- Passage of the Professional Engineer (PE) examination
-
Compliance with any restrictions imposed by the Board
-
Document military service (if applicable): Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 provides credit for relevant military training and education toward licensing requirements.
-
Apply through the state: Applicants must submit credentials to the Construction Industry Licensing Board, not to a local office. The Board evaluates education, work experience, and exam results.
-
Pass the PE exam: Candidates must demonstrate competency through the standardized Professional Engineer examination.
Contact the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) for specific application procedures, current fees, and exam schedules.
Local Requirements
The Crossings CDP is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. While engineering licensure is regulated entirely at the state level, local permit issuance and inspections may be required for projects within the CDP.

Exemptions
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensure:
- Work performed by employees of the property owner on the owner's property (if the owner is not in the business of construction)
- Work performed under the direct supervision of a licensed engineer
- Routine maintenance or repair of existing structures
- Work on single-family residential structures under specific thresholds
Review Fla. Stat. § 489.103 in full to confirm whether your work qualifies for an exemption.
