Sewer/Water Licensing in The Hammocks CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Florida law requires a license for any person who engages in the business of installing, constructing, repairing, or maintaining water and sewer systems. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, a "water and sewer contractor" is defined as a contractor who works on potable water supply systems, wastewater systems, and related infrastructure. This includes trenching, laying pipe, making connections, backflow prevention installation, and system repairs that affect public health or safety.
If you perform this work for compensation in The Hammocks CDP, you must be licensed by the State of Florida before beginning work.
How to Get Licensed

Apply to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, which oversees all construction licensing in Florida, including water and sewer contractor licenses.

Meet experience and education requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.113. You must demonstrate:
- Four years of verifiable experience in water and sewer installation and repair work, OR
- A combination of education and experience meeting state standards

Pass the state examination covering Florida construction law, building codes, safety standards, and water/sewer system practices specific to the trade.

Apply through the CILB website or contact the Construction Industry Licensing Board directly for current application procedures, fees, and exam schedules.
Upon approval, you will receive your Florida Construction License. This license is valid statewide, including The Hammocks CDP.
Local Requirements
The Hammocks CDP is located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. Permits for water and sewer work must be obtained through Miami-Dade County's building permit system, not a town-specific department.
Consult The Hammocks Municipal Code for any local amendments, impact fees, or additional local requirements that may apply to contractor licensing and permitting in the community. Contact the Miami-Dade County Building Department to confirm all local permit requirements before starting work.
Exemptions
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, licensing is not required for:
- Property owners performing work on their own residential property (not for others)
- Employees of licensed contractors working under the contractor's supervision and license
- Work performed by municipalities or public utilities on their own systems
All other commercial or residential work for compensation requires a Florida construction license.
