Contractor Licensing in Westchester CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, a contractor license is required for any person who undertakes, offers to undertake, or submits a bid for construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement of any building or structure. Work involving construction, alteration, or repair of residential, commercial, or industrial property requires licensure under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, which defines contractors as those contracting to construct, repair, or improve buildings and structures.

The specific trade classification determines the license type you must obtain. General contractors, building contractors, and specialty contractors (such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing) each require appropriate licensure.

How to Get Licensed

State Application & Examination:

  1. Apply to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which administers contractor licensing under the Construction Industry Licensing Board per Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

  2. Meet experience requirements as outlined in Fla. Stat. § 489.113. Most trades require four years of documented experience in the specified field, though requirements vary by license classification.
