Engineering Licensing in Westchester CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, any person who offers to perform, or performs, engineering services must hold an active professional engineering license issued by the state. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" means the application of science and mathematics to practical purposes for the design, construction, operation, or improvement of public or private utilities, structures, machines, processes, systems, or devices. This includes site surveys, structural design, and infrastructure planning. If you are offering engineering services in Westchester CDP—whether to commercial, residential, or municipal clients—you must be licensed.

How to Get Licensed

Engineering licensure in Florida is regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become a licensed professional engineer:

  1. Education: You must hold at least a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  2. Experience: Fla. Stat. § 489.113 requires a minimum of four years of experience in engineering work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  3. Examination: You must pass the Florida Professional Engineer (PE) examination administered by the Board.
  4. Application: Apply directly to the Construction Industry Licensing Board (a state entity, not local). Submit proof of education, experience verification from supervising engineers, and examination passage.
  5. Military Credit: If you have relevant military training and education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements; document and submit this with your application.

The Board processes applications and issues the license. Allow 4–8 weeks for review after submission of complete documentation.
