Sewer/Water Licensing in Westchester CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law requires licensing for individuals who engage in the construction, installation, repair, or maintenance of water and sewer systems. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, a "contractor" performing such work must hold the appropriate state license. This includes work on potable water lines, wastewater collection systems, and related infrastructure.

Work that modifies, extends, or repairs public or private sewer and water systems is regulated. However, minor maintenance or repair work by property owners on their own residential property may fall under exemptions (see below).

How to Get Licensed

Sewer and water contractor licensing is administered by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Steps:

  1. Apply to the state board. Applicants must submit an application through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Construction Industry Licensing Board.

  2. Meet qualifications under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. You must demonstrate:

  3. Four years of experience in the trade during the five years preceding application (or equivalent education/apprenticeship substitution)
  4. Pass the Florida Contractor's Exam for the sewer/water category
  5. Meet financial responsibility requirements
  6. Obtain a surety bond

  7. Maintain your license. Continuing education may be required per state law.

The DBPR website provides the current application forms, examination dates, and fee schedules.
