Electrical Licensing in Fernandina Beach, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, alters, repairs, or maintains electrical systems in buildings or structures must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" means a person who undertakes to, offers to, or does construct, repair, or alter electrical systems. Work requiring a license includes wiring, equipment installation, panel work, and related electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

How to Get Licensed

Electrical licensing in Florida is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:

  1. Determine your classification: Florida offers licenses for Electrical Contractor, Electrical Contractor-Apprentice, Electrical Contractor-Journeyman, and Electrical Contractor-Master Electrician.

  2. Meet experience requirements: Fla. Stat. § 489.113 establishes minimum work experience. Journeyman electricians typically require documented practical experience; contractors require additional years of experience and often must employ a licensed electrician-in-charge.

  3. Military service credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements.

  4. Pass the licensing exam: You must pass the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board examination for your classification level.

  5. Apply with the state board: Submit your application, exam results, proof of experience, and applicable fees to the Construction Industry Licensing Board.
