Engineering Licensing in Yulee CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Florida regulates professional engineering through state statute. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" means services or creative work requiring professional judgment and involving the application of engineering principles.
If you perform engineering work in Yulee CDP—including design, analysis, or consultation on public or private projects—you must hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the state. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 establishes that only licensed engineers may practice engineering or use the title "Professional Engineer" in Florida.
Work that does NOT require a PE license is exempt under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, including certain routine or incidental engineering tasks performed by unlicensed personnel under a licensed engineer's responsible charge, and work by employees of the federal government.
How to Get Licensed
-
Meet qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must have a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent), plus four years of engineering experience under a licensed PE, or meet alternative pathways established by the Construction Industry Licensing Board.
-
Apply to the state. Submit your application to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which administers engineering licenses under the Construction Industry Licensing Board (Fla. Stat. § 489.107).
-
Pass the PE exam. You must pass the Professional Engineer (PE) examination administered by the board.
-
Military credit. If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements.
Once licensed by the state, your PE license is valid throughout Florida, including Yulee CDP.
