Engineering Licensing in Hurlburt Field CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensure for individuals who engage in the practice of engineering. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means service or creative work requiring engineering education, training, and experience in applying specialized knowledge to design, develop, test, or supervise engineering projects or public utilities.

If you perform engineering work in Hurlburt Field CDP, you must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the state. This includes design, analysis, consultation, and technical direction of construction or infrastructure projects.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must:
- Hold a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program (or equivalent)
- Complete required years of engineering experience under a licensed engineer
- Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your discipline

Step 2: Apply to the State Board
The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, processes all PE applications. Apply directly to the state board—not the local municipality.

Step 3: Military Credit
If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward licensing requirements. Submit military transcripts and credentials with your application.

Local Requirements

In Hurlburt Field CDP, after obtaining your state PE license, you must comply with Okaloosa County permitting and the Hurlburt Field Municipal Code. Consult the Hurlburt Field Municipal Code for local amendments, permit procedures, and any town-specific engineering standards that exceed state requirements.

Contact the Hurlburt Field Building Department (or Okaloosa County Building Department, which may have jurisdiction) to:
- Obtain local permits for engineering projects
- Verify compliance with local design standards
- Submit sealed engineering plans and calculations

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from PE licensure, including:
- Employee work performed solely for their employer (not offered to the public)
- Routine maintenance and repair work
- Design of single-family residential structures (under certain thresholds)
- Work performed under direct supervision of a licensed PE

However, exemptions are narrowly construed. When in doubt, obtain licensure.
