Contractor Licensing in Okeechobee city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law requires a license for any person who contracts to perform construction work. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "construction" means the construction, remodeling, alteration, repair, wrecking, or demolition of buildings, structures, or other improvements to real property.

If you perform this work for compensation in Okeechobee city, you must hold an active Florida Construction Industry License issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Determine your license classification.
Florida issues licenses at three levels—General Contractor, Building Contractor, and Specialty Contractor—each with different scope limits. See Fla. Stat. § 489.105 for scope definitions.

Step 2: Meet qualification requirements.
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a responsible person with 4 years of experience in the trade (within the past 10 years), OR
- Have 4 years of documented experience yourself plus pass the examination
- Maintain workers' compensation insurance and general liability coverage as required

Step 3: Pass the state examination.
Fla. Stat. § 489.111 governs licensure by examination. You must pass the state construction exam administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The board sets exam schedules and fees.

Step 4: Apply for your Florida license.
Submit your application directly to the Construction Industry Licensing Board. See Fla. Stat. § 489.107 for board address and procedures.

Local Requirements

Once you obtain your state license, you must comply with Okeechobee city and Okeechobee County local requirements before performing work within city limits.

Permitting: Contact the Okeechobee city Building Department to pull construction permits for specific projects. The city enforces the Okeechobee Municipal Code; review it for any local amendments, additional licensing tiers, or local fees beyond state requirements.

See the Okeechobee Municipal Code for current local construction standards and permit procedures.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work and workers:
- Owners performing work on their own property (with limits)
- Employees of a licensed contractor working under that contractor's supervision
- Certain work performed by utility companies and government agencies
- Minor repairs as defined by statute

Review § 489.103 for the full list and any restrictions on owner-performed work.
