Sewer/Water Licensing in Edgewood city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who engages in the business of installing, constructing, altering, or repairing water or sewer systems must hold a valid Florida construction license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, a "contractor" is defined as any person who, for compensation, undertakes to, promises to, or agrees to build, construct, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, move, wreck, or demolish any building or structure. Water and sewer work falls under this definition and requires licensure by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB).

How to Get Licensed

  1. Apply to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board. You must submit an application to the CILB, which is established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

  2. Meet Qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must demonstrate:

  3. Competency through examination
  4. Relevant experience (requirements vary by license classification)
  5. Good moral character and financial responsibility

  6. Pass the Contractor Exam. You must pass the CILB examination covering plumbing, water systems, sewer systems, and applicable Florida law.

  7. Submit Required Documentation. Include proof of experience, references, and any certifications. If your work involves medical gas systems, Fla. Stat. § 489.1136 may require additional medical gas certification.

Contact the CILB or visit the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) website for current application procedures, exam schedules, and fees.

Local Requirements

In Edgewood city, all sewer/water work also requires a local permit from the Edgewood Building Department. Contact the Building Department to:
- Pull required work permits
- Verify compliance with local codes
- Obtain inspection scheduling

Review the Edgewood Municipal Code for any local amendments, additional bonding requirements, or conditions specific to Edgewood that supersede or supplement state law.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensing requirements. These may include:
- Maintenance or repair of your own home (owner-occupied, single-family dwelling)
- Work performed by a property owner on their own property in some cases
- Certain minor repairs under specified conditions

Review the statute carefully, as exemptions are narrow and conditions-dependent. When in doubt, obtain a license.
