Plumbing Licensing in Lake Butler, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, alters, services, or repairs plumbing systems in Lake Butler must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "plumbing" includes the installation, maintenance, and repair of all pipes, fixtures, and appliances connected to a water or sewage system within or outside a building.

Work that requires licensing includes: water supply lines, drainage systems, gas piping, medical gas systems, fixture installation, and septic tank systems. Even minor repairs and alterations typically require a licensed plumber.

How to Get Licensed

Florida plumbing licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), governed under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Step 1: Meet qualification requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. You must demonstrate competency through:
- Documented work experience (typically 4 years for a journeyman plumber or 2 years with an associate degree)
- Passage of the CILB plumbing exam

Step 2: Apply directly to the CILB (not through Lake Butler). Submit proof of experience, education, and pass the state exam covering Florida plumbing codes, safety, and installation standards.

Step 3: Once licensed by the state, you are authorized to work in Lake Butler.

If you install medical gas systems, you must also obtain medical gas certification per Fla. Stat. § 489.1136.

Local Requirements

Lake Butler operates under the Lake Butler Municipal Code. Before beginning any plumbing work in the city, you must:

Contact the Lake Butler Building Department to confirm current local amendments, permit fees, and inspection procedures. State licensure alone does not exempt you from local permitting and code compliance.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensing:
- Maintenance of plumbing systems by property owners on their own single-family residential property
- Installation of water softeners and certain appliance connections (specific limitations apply)

Exempt persons may still be required to pull permits and pass inspections under Lake Butler code.
