Anyone performing electrical work in Maitland must hold a license issued by the State of Florida. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" means a person who undertakes to, offers to, or holds himself or herself out as being able to undertake to, or to supervise and direct the installation, construction, alteration, repair, or maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. This includes residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work.

How to Get Licensed

Electrical licensing in Florida is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (Fla. Stat. § 489.107).

Step 1: Determine your license classification—Registered Electrician, Certified Electrician, or Electrical Contractor—based on the scope of work you intend to perform.

Step 2: Meet the qualification requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which include:
- Documented practical experience (typically 4 years for most classifications)
- Documented classroom hours in electrical theory and code
- Current CPR certification

Step 3: Pass the state licensing examination administered by the Board.

Step 4: Submit your application with proof of experience, education, and exam passage to the CILB.

Veterans with relevant military electrical training may receive credit toward experience and education requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

For application procedures, contact the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board directly through the DBPR website.
