HVAC Licensing in Oakland, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, repairs, or maintains heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in Oakland must hold a valid Florida HVAC contractor license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, an "air conditioning contractor" is defined as a person who engages in the business of installing, maintaining, or repairing air conditioning, heating, or ventilation systems. This includes residential and commercial work. Design work, system diagnostics, and equipment sales without installation generally do not require licensure, but any hands-on system work does.

How to Get Licensed

  2. Four years of paid work experience as an HVAC technician under a licensed contractor, OR
  3. Two years of work experience plus a high school diploma or GED plus completion of an approved trade school program in HVAC

  4. Pass the exam: Complete the Florida HVAC Contractor Certification Exam administered by the CILB.

  5. Apply to CILB: Submit your application, proof of experience, exam results, and fees to the Construction Industry Licensing Board (the state board that oversees all construction trades in Florida under Fla. Stat. § 489.107).

  6. Obtain workers' compensation insurance: Florida law requires this before you legally operate.
