Electrical Licensing in Orlando, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, alters, or repairs electrical wiring, equipment, or systems in buildings or structures must hold an active electrical license in Florida. This includes work on power distribution, lighting, and associated equipment. According to Fla. Stat. § 489.105, an "electrical contractor" is defined as a person engaged in the business of installing or contracting to install electrical equipment and wiring. The specific scope of regulated work is set by state statute and applies within Orlando city limits.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Applicants must satisfy experience and education requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. The law requires a combination of practical experience and classroom instruction. Military training and education may qualify for credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Step 2: Apply with the State
The Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, issues electrical licenses. Applications are submitted through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), not through Orlando directly. The applicant must pass the required examination covering the Florida Electrical Code and related standards.

Step 3: Complete Exam
Pass the DBPR electrical contractor exam. Exam content and scheduling are managed by the state board referenced in Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Once licensed by the state, the license is valid in Orlando and throughout Florida.

Local Requirements

Electrical work in Orlando requires a city permit before starting any project. Contact the Orlando Building Department to pull permits and obtain local approval. Work must comply with the Orlando Municipal Code, available at https://library.municode.com/fl/orlando. Check the current code for any local amendments or amendments specific to electrical installations within city limits. The state license allows you to work; the city permit ensures local code compliance.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work and individuals from licensing requirements. These include:
- Owners performing work on their own residential property (with specific limitations)
- Licensed plumbers performing plumbing-related electrical work within their scope
- Utility company employees installing utility infrastructure
- Other narrowly defined categories

Review § 489.103 in full to determine if specific work qualifies for exemption.
