Engineering Licensing in Taft CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, professional engineers and engineers-in-training must be licensed when offering or performing services that constitute the practice of engineering. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means offering or providing public service or creative work requiring engineering education, training, and experience in applying special knowledge of mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences to such professional services or creative work as consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, design, and supervision of construction for public or private clients.

If you perform engineering work in Taft CDP—whether designing structures, systems, or infrastructure—you must hold a current Florida professional engineer (PE) license or engineer-in-training (EIT) certificate, unless you fall within a specific exemption.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Verify eligibility. Meet education and experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. Typically, this requires a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program plus relevant work experience (typically 4 years for a bachelor's degree holder).

  2. Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). The CILB, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, oversees engineer licensing in Florida. Submit your application through the CILB's official channel.

  3. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to obtain your EIT certificate, then pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam after meeting experience requirements.

  4. Obtain your license number from the CILB before practicing in Florida.

Veterans and service members may receive credit for relevant military training and education toward licensing requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
