Engineering Licensing in Golf village, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates professional engineers under Chapter 489. A license is required if you perform engineering services—including design, consultation, or responsible charge of engineering work—for the public. This includes structural design, site plans, and engineering analyses that affect public safety or welfare.

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means providing professional services or creative work requiring engineering education, training, and experience. If your work meets this definition and serves the public, you must be licensed.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Apply through the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board, which administers professional engineering licenses under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

  2. Meet qualifications under Fla. Stat. § 489.113:

  3. Hold a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program
  4. Complete required work experience (typically 4+ years under a licensed engineer)
  5. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  6. Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam for your discipline

  7. Military credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements. Submit documentation with your application.

  8. Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board with exam results, experience verification, and required fees. Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks.

Local Requirements

Golf village is located in Palm Beach County. Building permits and plan reviews are handled by the Palm Beach County Building Department or the Town of Golf village Building Department, depending on the project scope.

Consult the Golf Municipal Code for local amendments, setback requirements, design standards, or additional review procedures that may apply to your project. Local code may impose conditions beyond state licensing requirements.

Contact the Town of Golf village Building Department to determine whether your project needs local permits and which agency has jurisdiction.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensing:
- Employees of licensed engineers acting under direct supervision
- Work on single-family residential buildings (under certain conditions)
- Routine maintenance or repair not involving design or engineering judgment
- Work performed by employees of public agencies for the government

If your work falls within these exemptions, licensing is not required. However, if you offer services to the public or hold yourself out as an engineer, licensing applies.
