Plumbing Licensing in Golf village, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who designs, constructs, contracts, operates, or supervises plumbing work in Golf village must hold a Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as the practice involving the installation, maintenance, alteration, or repair of pipes, fixtures, and appurtenances connected to the water supply, drainage system, or gas piping system of any building or structure.

Work requiring licensure includes water supply lines, drain and vent systems, gas piping for appliances, water heaters, and related fixtures. Even if you perform plumbing work as an employee under a licensed contractor's supervision, you must hold an appropriate license for your role.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Determine your license classification: Florida issues Plumbing Contractor, Plumbing Journeyman, and Plumbing Apprentice licenses under Fla. Stat. § 489.113.

  2. Meet experience requirements:

  3. Plumbing Contractor: Generally requires 4 years of documented plumbing experience and passing a state exam
  4. Plumbing Journeyman: Requires apprenticeship completion or equivalent experience and exam passage
  5. Plumbing Apprentice: Requires registration with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR)

  6. Apply with the Florida DBPR: Submit applications directly to the state licensing board established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The state issues all construction trade licenses; Golf village does not issue plumbing licenses independently.

  7. Pass the state exam: Your classification determines exam content. Exams cover Florida plumbing code, safety standards, and trade-specific competencies.

  8. Obtain your license: Once approved, you receive a license number valid statewide, including Golf village.

Local Requirements

Golf village is located in Palm Beach County. Building permits for plumbing work must be obtained through the Golf village Building Department before work begins.

Consult the Golf Municipal Code for any local amendments, permit procedures, or additional requirements specific to the municipality. Local ordinances may impose additional inspections, fees, or permitting steps beyond state law.

Contact the Golf village Building Department to confirm current permit requirements and procedures for your project.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work and persons from licensure, including:
- Routine maintenance and repair work performed by property owners on their own residential property
- Work performed by utility companies on their own systems
- Certain emergency repairs under specific conditions

These exemptions are narrow. When in doubt, verify with the DBPR or local building authority before proceeding without a license.
