Electrical Licensing in Ocean Ridge, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, maintains, or repairs electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment is required to hold an active electrical license under Florida law. This includes work on lighting systems, power distribution, grounding systems, and service installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Work that constitutes "the practice of electrical construction" requires licensure per Fla. Stat. § 489.105.

How to Get Licensed

Florida issues electrical licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Step 1: Determine your license classification. Florida offers licenses for Certified Electrician, Licensed Electrician, and Specialty Electrician (limited scope). Each class has different experience requirements.

Step 2: Meet qualification requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. You must:
- Complete required hours of approved technical instruction
- Accumulate required work experience under a licensed electrician (typically 8,000 hours for most classifications)
- Pass the state licensing examination

Step 3: Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of education, experience documentation, and exam passing scores.

Step 4: Receive your license from the state board.

Veterans may receive credit for relevant military training and education that satisfies experience or education requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
