Engineering Licensing in San Castle CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates "engineering" as a professional service. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, a licensed professional engineer (PE) must perform or offer to perform engineering services in Florida. This includes designing structures, systems, and infrastructure; preparing plans and specifications; and certifying construction compliance with engineering standards.

Work that requires an engineer's seal and signature includes structural design, site engineering, drainage systems, and similar professional services. Routine construction work performed by contractors does not require engineering licensure, but any engineering analysis, design, or certification does.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Education Requirements

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent).

Step 2: Gain Required Experience

Florida requires four years of progressively responsible engineering experience under a licensed professional engineer. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 details specific hour and responsibility requirements.

Step 3: Pass the PE Exam

You must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gain the required experience, then pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam administered by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

Step 4: Apply to DBPR

Submit your application, exam scores, and experience documentation to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107 oversees these credentials.

Military Credit

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131, qualifying military training and education may be credited toward experience requirements.
