Engineering Licensing in South Palm Beach, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensing for individuals who practice engineering—defined as offering or providing services, including consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, design, or responsible charge of construction, that involve applying engineering principles to public or private utilities, structures, machines, processes, and systems. [Fla. Stat. § 489.105]

If your work involves these services and affects public safety, health, or welfare, you must hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) under the Construction Industry Licensing Board. [Fla. Stat. § 489.107]

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
You must have a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program and four years of progressive engineering experience under a licensed professional engineer. Military service may count toward experience requirements if it involved relevant training and education. [Fla. Stat. § 489.113, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131]

Step 2: Apply with DBPR
Submit your application to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's Construction Industry Licensing Board. Include proof of education, work experience, and references from licensed engineers who supervised your work.

Step 3: Pass the PE Exam
Pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The exam tests your knowledge of engineering practice in your discipline.

Step 4: Receive Your License
Once approved and the exam is passed, DBPR issues your PE license. [Fla. Stat. § 489.113]
