Who Needs a License

Under Florida law, any person who contracts to install, repair, or maintain water conditioning systems must hold a valid license issued by the state. Water conditioning work is regulated as a construction trade in Florida and falls under the Construction Industry Licensing Board's jurisdiction.

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "water conditioning contractor" means a person who contracts to install, repair, or service water softening, water purification, or water treatment systems for residential or commercial use. If you perform this work for compensation or hold yourself out as capable of performing it, licensure is required.

How to Get Licensed

1. Apply to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which oversees the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

2. Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113:

3. Demonstrate at least four years of work experience in water conditioning within the 10 years preceding application, or equivalent training/education approved by the board
4. Pass the DBPR water conditioning contractor examination

5. Provide proof of financial responsibility

6. Submit your application directly to DBPR with required documentation, examination fees, and application fees.

7. Obtain your license once DBPR approves your application and you have passed the examination.

Local Requirements

Holiday CDP is located in Pasco County, Florida. Building permits for water conditioning work must be obtained through the Pasco County Building Department or the local building official for Holiday CDP.
