Engineering Licensing in Land O' Lakes CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensure for individuals who offer or perform engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means performing or offering to perform services such as consultation, investigation, evaluation, or design of public or private utilities, structures, machines, processes, or systems.

If you are performing engineering work in Land O' Lakes CDP, you must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the state. This applies regardless of whether you work as a sole practitioner, employee, or firm principal.

How to Get Licensed

Florida licenses engineers through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), not a local town board.

Requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113:

  1. Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent
  2. Experience: Four years of responsible charge experience in engineering practice
  3. Exam: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, then the Professional Engineer (PE) exam
  4. Application: Submit application and fees to DBPR

Military Credit: Under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131, relevant military training and education may count toward experience requirements. Applicants with military background should document this when applying.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, oversees certain construction-related professionals but does not issue PE licenses—that function is exclusively DBPR's.

For current application procedures, timelines, and exam dates, contact the DBPR directly.
