Electrical Licensing in San Antonio city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who performs electrical construction, installation, repair, or maintenance work in San Antonio must hold an active Florida electrical license, unless exempt. Florida law defines "electrical construction" as the design, installation, erection, or repair of electrical systems and equipment that generate, transmit, or use electrical energy. [Fla. Stat. § 489.105]
Work requiring licensure includes wiring buildings, installing service equipment, repairing electrical systems, and similar activities. Unlicensed electrical work is prohibited and subject to penalties.
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Determine Your License Classification
Florida offers three electrical license types: Electrician, Electrical Contractor, and Electrical Inspector. [Fla. Stat. § 489.113]
Step 2: Meet Qualifications
For an Electrician license, you must have 8,000 hours of documented electrical experience and pass the state licensing exam.
For an Electrical Contractor license, you must have 4 years of experience as a licensed electrician in the five years preceding application, or equivalent documented experience, and pass the state exam. [Fla. Stat. § 489.113]
If you have relevant military training and education, you may receive credit toward experience requirements. [Fla. Stat. § 489.1131]
Step 3: Apply with the State
Submit your application to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board, which administers electrical licensing. [Fla. Stat. § 489.107] The Board will provide exam dates, locations, and fee information.
Step 4: Pass the Examination
You must pass the state licensing exam for your classification before the Board will issue your license.
Local Requirements
In San Antonio, building permits for electrical work must be obtained through the San Antonio Building Department. Contact the Building Department to determine permit requirements, fees, and inspection procedures for your specific project.
San Antonio city has adopted the San Antonio Municipal Code, which may contain local amendments or additional requirements beyond state law. Review the Municipal Code at https://library.municode.com/fl/san_antonio for any local electrical licensing or installation standards.
Pasco County may also impose additional requirements; confirm with the Building Department which jurisdiction's codes apply to your project location.
Exemptions
Florida law exempts certain work from licensing requirements. The following do not require an electrical license: maintenance of electrical equipment by the equipment manufacturer or its employee, minor repairs by property owners to their own residences, and certain low-voltage systems. [Fla. Stat. § 489.103]
Contact the San Antonio Building Department or the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board for clarification on whether your specific work qualifies for an exemption.
