Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, alters, repairs, or maintains electrical wiring, equipment, or apparatus in buildings, structures, or premises must hold a Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, electrical contracting is defined as work on systems that generate, transmit, or distribute electrical power for light, heat, or power purposes.

Work requiring licensure includes:
- Installation of wiring, conduit, and electrical systems
- Repair or alteration of electrical equipment
- Maintenance of electrical systems in commercial or residential buildings

How to Get Licensed

Licensure is issued by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The state process requires:

  1. Determine your classification. Florida issues licenses for electricians (journeyman and apprentice) and electrical contractors.

  2. Meet experience and education requirements. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must demonstrate relevant work experience and education in electrical work. Credit for relevant military training and education applies per Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

  3. Apply through the state. Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board, which processes all electrical licensing for Florida.

  4. Pass the licensing exam. You must pass the state electrical examination covering code, safety, and technical competency.

  5. Obtain your state license. Once approved, you receive your Florida electrical license, valid statewide.

Exemptions
