HVAC Licensing in Largo city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person or business performing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or refrigeration work in Largo must hold a valid Florida state license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, an "air conditioning contractor" is defined as someone who engages in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning systems. This includes ductwork, refrigerant handling, and system design work.

Work performed on residential, commercial, and industrial systems all requires licensure. Even minor repairs and maintenance calls trigger licensing requirements unless you fall under an exemption (see below).

How to Get Licensed

HVAC licensing is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:

  1. Meet qualifications: Under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must demonstrate competency through either documented experience in air conditioning work or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.

  2. Pass the examination: The state board administers a written exam covering technical knowledge, code compliance, and business practices.

  3. Apply through the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board: Submit your application, proof of experience or education, and exam results to the state board. Processing occurs at the state level, not locally.

  4. Obtain your license number: Once approved, you receive a state license valid throughout Florida, including Largo.

Specific experience requirements and exam details are available directly from the Construction Industry Licensing Board.

Local Requirements

Largo city contractors must also comply with Largo Municipal Code requirements. While HVAC licensing itself is a state function, local permits and inspections are required for all HVAC work performed in the city.

Permit procedures: Contact the Largo Building Department to pull permits before beginning work. Local code may specify inspection points, system specifications, or additional documentation requirements.

Review the Largo Municipal Code for any local amendments to state law or additional city-level restrictions on HVAC contractors.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, exemptions from licensing include:

Homeowners performing work on their own residences may have limited exemptions, but commercial and rental property work requires a licensed contractor regardless of ownership.
