Sewer/Water Licensing in Largo city, Florida
Who Needs a License
In Florida, any person who contracts to construct, repair, or maintain water or sewer systems must hold a valid license from the Construction Industry Licensing Board unless they qualify for an exemption.[^1] This includes installation, modification, and repair of potable water lines, wastewater collection systems, and related infrastructure.
The state defines regulated work under "water and sewer" contracting as work that affects public health, safety, and welfare through proper installation and maintenance of these critical systems.[^2]
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Meet Qualifications
You must meet one of these experience pathways under Florida law:[^3]
- Four years of active experience in water/sewer work under a licensed contractor, OR
- Two years of experience plus relevant vocational training/apprenticeship, OR
- A combination of education and experience as defined by the Construction Industry Licensing Board
Step 2: Pass the Exam
Apply to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) and pass the state licensing examination for water and sewer contractors. The board administers all contractor licensing statewide.[^4]
Step 3: Register Locally
After obtaining your state license, you must comply with Largo's local requirements before performing work within city limits (see Local Requirements below).
Local Requirements
Largo city requires that all construction work, including sewer/water contracting, comply with the Largo Municipal Code.[^5]
Before beginning any water or sewer work in Largo:
- Pull permits through the Largo Building Department
- Verify that your state contractor's license is current and in good standing
- Comply with any local amendments to state licensing requirements outlined in the municipal code
For specific local code sections, amendments, or permitting procedures unique to Largo, consult the Largo Municipal Code or contact the Largo Building Department directly.
Exemptions
