Electrical Licensing in Safety Harbor, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, maintains, or alters electrical systems in Safety Harbor must hold an active Florida electrical license. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, this includes work on wiring, equipment, and apparatus used to generate, manufacture, transform, transmit, distribute, or use electrical energy. Unlicensed electrical work is prohibited and subject to enforcement action.

How to Get Licensed

Florida electrical licensing is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:

  1. Determine your license classification. Florida issues licenses for electricians at different levels (apprentice, journeyman, master). Fla. Stat. § 489.105 defines these categories.

  2. Meet experience and education requirements. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 specifies the minimum hours of documented, supervised experience required for each license level. You may earn credit for relevant military training and education per Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

  3. Pass the state examination. The Construction Industry Licensing Board administers exams covering the National Electrical Code and Florida-specific regulations.

  4. Apply with the state. Submit your application, experience documentation, exam results, and fees to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The board processes all applications statewide—there is no separate Safety Harbor licensing authority.

Contact the Safety Harbor Building Department for current application procedures and examination schedules, or visit the DBPR website for detailed requirements.
