Sewer/Water Licensing in St. Petersburg city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law requires licensing for anyone who contracts to perform, supervise, or offer to perform water and sewer work. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "contractor" means any person who undertakes to, attempts to, or offers to construct, repair, or improve any building or structure for another person. This includes sewer and water line installation, repair, and maintenance work performed for compensation.

Work that triggers licensing requirements includes:
- Installation of new water or sewer lines
- Repair or replacement of existing water or sewer infrastructure
- Connection of structures to municipal water or sewer systems
- Maintenance of water and sewer systems serving multiple properties

If you perform this work without a license, you are subject to fines and enforcement action under state law.

How to Get Licensed

Licensing is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To obtain a license:

  1. Verify your classification. Determine whether your work falls under general contractor, specialty contractor, or building contractor classifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.105.

  2. Meet experience requirements. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 establishes specific experience and education qualifications depending on your contractor classification. You must document relevant work history.

  3. Pass the state exam. Contact the Construction Industry Licensing Board to register for the appropriate licensing exam.

  4. Apply for your license. Submit your application, exam results, proof of experience, and required fees to the state board.

  5. Maintain your license. Comply with all continuing education and renewal requirements set by the state.

For detailed current requirements, contact the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board directly through the state's official licensing portal.
