Engineering Licensing in Tierra Verde CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates professional engineering work. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "professional engineering" means offering or performing services or work involving the application of engineering principles. This includes design, analysis, and consultation on public or private structures, systems, or processes.

If you perform engineering work in Tierra Verde CDP, you must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the state, not the town. The state regulates this trade; local licensing is not an alternative.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Apply to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Division of Professions, which administers PE licensing statewide.

  2. Meet qualifications under Fla. Stat. § 489.113:

  3. Complete a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent).
  4. Gain four years of work experience under a licensed engineer.
  5. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  6. Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your discipline.

  7. Military credit: Under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131, relevant military training and education may reduce experience requirements. Apply this credit through DBPR.

  8. Submit your application to DBPR with transcripts, experience records, and exam scores. Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, does not issue PE licenses—it governs contractors. PE licensing is separate and state-level only.

Local Requirements

Tierra Verde CDP is located in Pinellas County. Once licensed by the state, you must comply with local permit requirements when performing engineering work in the town.

Permit applications: Submit to the Tierra Verde Building Department or Pinellas County Building Department (jurisdiction depends on project scope). Contact the Tierra Verde Building Department to confirm which office handles your specific project.

Local code: Review the Tierra Verde Municipal Code for any local amendments, design standards, or filing procedures that may apply to engineering work within the town limits.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from PE licensure:
- Work on structures under a specified square footage or occupancy class (review the statute for exact thresholds).
- Work performed by employees of federal, state, or local government agencies within their scope of employment.
- Work that does not involve the public health, safety, or welfare.

If your work qualifies for an exemption, you are not required to hold a PE license, but you must still comply with Tierra Verde building codes and permit requirements.
