Plumbing Licensing in Auburndale, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who engages in plumbing work in Auburndale must hold a Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "plumbing" means the practice, business, or work of installing, repairing, extending, or altering pipes, fixtures, and appliances for the supply of water, removal of waterborne waste, and venting in buildings and structures.

Work that requires licensure includes:
- Installation of water supply lines
- Installation of drain, waste, and vent systems
- Repair or alteration of plumbing systems
- Installation of gas piping connected to appliances (certain work)

The license requirement applies whether the work is performed by an individual, partnership, or corporation.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualification Requirements

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Demonstrate competency through education and experience (typically 4 years of apprenticeship or equivalent work experience under a licensed plumber, or completion of an approved vocational program)
- Pass a state examination administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board

Step 2: Apply to the State

Submit your application to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The board issues all plumbing licenses statewide. Applications must include proof of qualifying experience, education credentials, and exam passage.

Step 3: Local Permit Registration

Once licensed by the state, you must register with the Auburndale Building Department before performing plumbing work within city limits. Contact the Auburndale Building Department for local registration requirements and permit procedures.

Local Requirements

Auburndale enforces plumbing standards through the Auburndale Municipal Code. Review the Auburndale Municipal Code for local amendments, permit application procedures, inspections, and fees that may exceed or supplement state requirements.

All plumbing permits must be pulled through the Auburndale Building Department prior to work commencement. Local inspections are required at rough-in and final stages.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, licensing is not required for:
- Work performed on your own residential property (not for compensation)
- Certain minor repair work defined by statute
- Work performed under the direct supervision of a licensed plumber (apprentices and trainees)

Owner-occupied single-family residences may have additional exemptions; however, all commercial work and work-for-hire requires licensure regardless of project scope.
