Engineering Licensing in Indian Lake Estates CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, professional engineers must be licensed to offer or practice engineering services to the public. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means performing professional services or creative work requiring engineering education, training, and experience. This includes designing structures, systems, and infrastructure; preparing plans and specifications; and providing engineering consultation.

If you perform engineering work in Indian Lake Estates CDP, you must hold a valid Florida professional engineer license unless you qualify for an exemption.

How to Get Licensed

Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) does not issue professional engineer licenses. Instead, professional engineering licensure is administered by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers under a separate regulatory structure (not CILB).

To become a licensed professional engineer in Florida, you must:

  1. Meet education requirements (typically a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program)
  2. Gain relevant work experience under a licensed engineer (typically 4 years)
  3. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  4. Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your discipline
  5. Apply to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers

Veterans with relevant military training and education may receive credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Contact the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (not a local agency) for application procedures, exam schedules, and licensing requirements specific to your engineering discipline.
