Plumbing Licensing in Lake Alfred city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who engages in plumbing work in Lake Alfred must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as the practice of installing, repairing, or maintaining pipes, fixtures, and appliances for the conveyance and use of water and the removal of waterborne wastes. This includes water supply lines, drain-waste-vent systems, and gas piping when part of a plumbing system installation.

Work performed by an unlicensed person constitutes a violation of Florida construction licensing law.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Experience Requirements

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must demonstrate either:
- Four years of practical experience in plumbing work under a licensed plumber, or
- An equivalent combination of education and on-the-job training as established by the Construction Industry Licensing Board

Step 2: Pass the Licensing Exam

You must pass the Florida plumbing contractor examination administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107). The exam covers Florida Statutes Chapter 489 and local plumbing codes.

Step 3: Apply for Your License

Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board. Include proof of experience, exam passage, and any required documentation. The Board issues all state-level construction licenses, including plumbing contractor licenses.

Step 4: Obtain Local Permits

Once licensed, you must pull permits for specific work through the Lake Alfred Building Department. Contact the Lake Alfred Building Department for permit requirements, fees, and procedures specific to the city.

Local Requirements

Lake Alfred operates under the Lake Alfred Municipal Code. Review this code for any local amendments, additional permit requirements, inspection schedules, or fees that exceed state minimums. Local codes may impose stricter standards than Florida Statute § 489.

Permit requirements and inspections must be completed before work commences and at specified stages during the project.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from plumbing licensing requirements:
- Homeowners performing work on their own primary residence (for their own use, not for sale or rent)
- Employees of licensed plumbing contractors working under direct supervision
- Work performed by public utilities on their own systems
- Certain maintenance and repair work in specific limited contexts

Exemptions do not apply to work done for compensation or on property intended for resale.
