Plumbing Licensing in Chumuckla CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who engages in the business of plumbing in Chumuckla CDP must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as work involving the installation, repair, and maintenance of pipes, fixtures, and appliances for the supply and distribution of water; the collection and removal of waterborne wastes; and gas piping systems for fuel delivery. Work that falls within these categories requires licensure under state law.
How to Get Licensed
Florida plumbing licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. There is no separate local licensing process in Chumuckla CDP; all licensing occurs at the state level.
To qualify for a plumbing license under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Meet experience requirements: Typically four years of documented plumbing experience working under a licensed plumber, or equivalent apprenticeship hours.
- Pass the state exam: The CILB administers the Florida plumbing contractor examination, which tests knowledge of the Florida Building Code, plumbing code, and trade practices.
- Submit an application to the CILB with proof of experience, exam passage, workers' compensation insurance, and other required documentation.
- Pay applicable fees.
Contact the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board directly for current application procedures, exam schedules, and fee information. Applications are not processed through Chumuckla CDP.
Local Requirements
Plumbing permits must be obtained through Santa Rosa County (Chumuckla CDP's county authority). Contact the Santa Rosa County Building Department to pull permits before beginning work.
Review the Chumuckla Municipal Code for any local amendments, permit procedures, or additional requirements that may apply within the CDP. Local codes may impose conditions beyond state licensure.
Exemptions
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensing requirements, including:
- Work performed by a property owner on their own residential property (with limitations)
- Work performed by employees of a licensed contractor under direct supervision
- Routine maintenance and repair of existing systems by the property owner
However, these exemptions are narrow. Most commercial work and work for compensation requires a licensed contractor.
