Plumbing Licensing in Bee Ridge CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs plumbing work in Bee Ridge CDP must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as the practice involving the installation, repair, maintenance, alteration, and extension of all pipes, fixtures, and appurtenances in connection with any water supply, drainage, or gas piping system. This includes water heaters, backflow preventers, and related work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Work performed on your own single-family residence that you own and occupy may qualify for an exemption (see Exemptions section below), but all commercial and rental property plumbing requires licensing.

How to Get Licensed

Florida issues plumbing licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), which operates under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The process requires:

  1. Meet qualifications: Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must demonstrate four years of documented plumbing experience working under a licensed plumber, or equivalent trade experience combined with classroom hours.

  2. Pass the exam: The CILB administers a written examination covering Florida plumbing code, safety practices, and technical knowledge.

  3. Apply with CILB: Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board (not to Bee Ridge or Sarasota County). Include proof of experience, exam results, and fees.

  4. Receive your license: Upon approval, you receive a statewide license valid throughout Florida.

Contact the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) or visit the CILB website for current exam dates, application forms, and fees.

Local Requirements

Bee Ridge CDP is located in Sarasota County, Florida. While plumbing licensing is regulated entirely by the state, local permits are required before beginning work.
