Electrical Licensing in Fruitville CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who designs, erects, installs, alters, repairs, or maintains electrical systems in Fruitville CDP must hold an active Florida electrical license. This applies to work on wiring, equipment, appliances, and fixtures that are part of a building's electrical installation.
Florida law defines "electrical contracting" as contracting to perform electrical work. A license is required unless your work falls within a specific exemption (see Exemptions section below). [Fla. Stat. § 489.105]
How to Get Licensed
-
Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board. Florida's state licensing board, created under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, issues all electrical contractor licenses. You cannot obtain a license directly through Fruitville or Sarasota County; you must apply at the state level.
-
Meet qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Provide proof of experience in electrical work (specific hours required depend on license classification—journeyman, specialty, or contractor)
- Pass a state examination covering electrical code and trade knowledge
-
Demonstrate financial responsibility
-
Submit application and exam. Contact the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board for application procedures, required documentation, exam dates, and fees.
-
Obtain military credit (if applicable). If you have relevant military training in electrical work, you may receive credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
Once licensed by the state, your license is valid statewide, including in Fruitville CDP.
Local Requirements
All electrical work in Fruitville CDP requires a permit from the Sarasota County building authority, as Fruitville is an unincorporated community development area within Sarasota County. Contact the Sarasota County Building Department to apply for electrical permits before beginning work.
Review the Fruitville Municipal Code for any local amendments, permit fees, or inspection requirements that may apply beyond state law.
Exemptions
The following are exempt from Florida electrical licensing requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.103:
- Homeowners performing electrical work on their own residential property (for their own use, not for sale)
- Employees of a licensed electrical contractor working under that contractor's supervision and license
- Maintenance and repair work on industrial machinery and equipment (in some cases)
- Work performed by municipalities and governmental agencies
Exemptions are narrowly construed. If you are unsure whether your work qualifies, consult the state licensing board or Sarasota County Building Department before proceeding.
