Plumbing Licensing in Lake Sarasota CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who engages in plumbing work in Lake Sarasota CDP must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as installing, repairing, or maintaining pipes, fixtures, and appliances for the supply and distribution of water and the removal and disposal of waterborne wastes.

Work requiring licensure includes installation of water supply lines, drainage systems, gas piping, medical gas systems, and related fixtures. Both employees and contractors performing this work must be licensed.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete required hours of apprenticeship or experience under a licensed plumber (typically 10,000 hours for most plumbing licenses)

Step 2: Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board
The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107 issues plumbing licenses statewide. You must apply directly to this state board, not to the town.

Step 3: Pass the Licensing Exam
You must pass the Florida plumbing examination covering code compliance, safety, and trade knowledge.

Step 4: Medical Gas Certification (if applicable)
If installing or servicing medical gas systems, Fla. Stat. § 489.1136 requires additional medical gas certification.

Local Requirements

Permits for plumbing work in Lake Sarasota CDP are issued through the Sarasota County building permitting system rather than a town-specific department. Contact the Sarasota County Building Department for permit applications and requirements.

Review the Lake Sarasota Municipal Code for any local amendments to state plumbing standards, local permit fees, or inspection procedures specific to the CDP.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensing, including:
- Minor repairs to existing plumbing using standard materials and methods
- Work performed by a property owner on their own residence (with limitations)
- Certain agricultural and industrial applications as defined by statute

Check the statute for complete exemption criteria, as improper application of exemptions can result in violations.
