Engineering Licensing in Pinecraft CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensure for individuals who offer professional engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means performing or offering to perform services—such as consulting, design, or inspection—that require application of engineering principles. If you design, plan, or certify construction or infrastructure work in Pinecraft CDP, you must hold an active professional engineer (PE) license issued by the state.

Not all construction work requires an engineer. Contractors performing construction itself typically need contractor licenses under Chapter 489, not engineering licenses—unless they're also providing engineering design or certification services.

How to Get Licensed

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) issues professional engineering licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board.

Requirements (Fla. Stat. § 489.113):
- Hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Complete required work experience under a licensed professional engineer
- Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your discipline

Application process:
1. Apply directly to DBPR at www.myfloridalicense.com
2. Submit official transcripts and work experience documentation
3. Register for and pass required exams through NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying)
4. Once licensed by the state, you are authorized to practice in Pinecraft CDP and throughout Florida

Military credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward licensing requirements. Submit military records with your application.

Local Requirements

Pinecraft CDP is located in Sarasota County. When you undertake engineering work here, you must comply with the Pinecraft Municipal Code. Review this code for any local amendments, permit requirements, or conditions that apply to engineering work in the jurisdiction.

Before beginning work, contact the Pinecraft Building Department or the Sarasota County Building Department to determine whether your project requires local building permits, plan reviews, or approvals beyond your state PE license.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensure requirements:
- Work performed by full-time employees for their employer (not offered to the public)
- Certain routine or maintenance work that does not constitute "practice of engineering"
- Work by licensed contractors performing construction (when not providing engineering design services)

An individual engineer may also be exempt from licensure if they work solely as an employee and do not offer services to the public under their own name or business.
