Electrical Licensing in Venice city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, alters, repairs, or maintains electrical systems and equipment must hold a Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" includes the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems serving buildings and structures. This applies throughout Venice city and Sarasota County.

Unlicensed electrical work is prohibited and subjects violators to penalties under Florida law.

How to Get Licensed

Florida issues electrical licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under authority granted by Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Steps:

  1. Determine your license category. Florida offers three classes: Journeyman Electrician, Master Electrician, and Electrical Contractor. Each has different scope and responsibility levels.

  2. Meet qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must satisfy work experience requirements (typically 8,000 hours for Journeyman, additional hours for Master) or hold equivalent certifications. Credit for relevant military training and education may apply under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

  3. Complete the state exam. You must pass the Florida electrical licensing exam administered by CILB.

  4. Apply with CILB. Submit your application directly to the Construction Industry Licensing Board in Tallahassee. Include proof of experience, exam scores, and required fees.

  5. Obtain local Venice city permits. Once licensed, contact the Venice city Building Department to pull electrical permits before beginning any work. Permits are required for all regulated electrical installations in the city.
