Electrical Licensing in Venice Gardens CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who performs electrical work in Venice Gardens must hold an appropriate state license. Under Florida law, "electrical work" includes the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in buildings and structures.[Fla. Stat. § 489.105] This covers wiring, panel installation, troubleshooting, and related tasks.
The state recognizes several license classes: Master Electrician, Certified Electrician, and Registered Electrician, each with different scope limitations.[Fla. Stat. § 489.113] The specific license class determines what work you may legally perform.
How to Get Licensed
Florida issues electrical licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), a division of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Step 1: Meet experience requirements. A Master Electrician must have at least 8,000 hours of experience; a Certified Electrician, 4,000 hours; and a Registered Electrician, 2,000 hours.[Fla. Stat. § 489.113]
Step 2: Complete the required exam. You must pass the CILB examination specific to your license class. The DBPR administers these through third-party testing vendors.
Step 3: Apply to DBPR. Submit your application with proof of experience, exam passage documentation, and the applicable fee. Applications are processed by DBPR's licensing bureau.
Step 4: Receive your license. Once approved, your license is valid statewide and recognized in Venice Gardens.
Military training and education may count toward experience requirements under certain conditions.[Fla. Stat. § 489.1131]
