Engineering Licensing in Heathrow CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates professional engineers under the Construction Industry Licensing Board framework. Fla. Stat. § 489.105 defines the scope of regulated work. If you perform services that require engineering licensure—including design, analysis, and professional recommendations involving public safety, structural systems, or construction—you must hold a valid Florida engineering license.

The specific disciplines regulated and their scope are established in Fla. Stat. § 489.105. Unlicensed practice of engineering is prohibited unless you fall within an exemption.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Meet qualifications: Fla. Stat. § 489.113 establishes qualifications for practice. You must demonstrate sufficient education and experience in engineering.

  2. Military credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows you to claim credit toward licensure requirements.

  3. Apply to the state board: The Construction Industry Licensing Board (Fla. Stat. § 489.107) issues engineering licenses in Florida. Submit your application directly to the state board—not to Heathrow or Seminole County. The board will verify your education, work experience, and exam passage.

  4. Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam: You must pass the Florida PE exam administered by the state board after meeting prerequisite education and experience requirements.

Local Requirements

Heathrow CDP operates under Heathrow Municipal Code. Contractors performing work in Heathrow must comply with local building permit requirements. Contact the Heathrow Building Department or Seminole County for specific permitting procedures and any local amendments to state engineering standards.

Your state PE license is recognized throughout Florida, including Heathrow. No additional local engineering license is required.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 details exemptions from licensing. Certain work—including routine maintenance, minor repairs, or work performed by individuals under direct supervision of a licensed engineer—may be exempt. Review this statute carefully to confirm whether your specific work qualifies.
