Electrical Licensing in Lake Mary, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs electrical work in Lake Mary must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" includes the installation, alteration, repair, or maintenance of electrical systems in buildings, structures, and other premises. This includes wiring, fixtures, equipment, and apparatus for light, heat, power, radio, television, signaling, fire alarm systems, and similar purposes.

A Florida electrical license is required before you begin work. Operating without one is a violation of state law.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must meet one of these pathways:
- Pass the Florida electrical contractor exam (for Certified Electrician or Registered Electrician licenses)
- Document relevant work experience (typically 4+ years for contractor licenses, verified by previous employers)
- If you have relevant military training or education, you may receive credit under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131

Step 2: Apply with the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The state board (established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107) processes all electrical license applications. You must apply directly with the state—not the city.

Step 3: Pass the state exam. Most applicants must pass the Florida electrical licensing exam. The board administers this test.

Step 4: Obtain your license from the state board before performing any electrical work in Lake Mary.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board is the exclusive authority for issuing electrical licenses in Florida.

Local Requirements

Once licensed at the state level, you must comply with Lake Mary's local permit and inspection requirements.

Permits: Contact the Lake Mary Building Department to pull electrical permits before beginning work. The city requires permits for electrical installations and modifications within city limits.

Local Code: Lake Mary has adopted local amendments through the Lake Mary Municipal Code. Contractors must review the current municipal code for any city-specific electrical standards, permit fees, inspection procedures, and amendments that may exceed state minimum requirements.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensing requirements:
- Maintenance and repair of equipment by the equipment manufacturer or an authorized agent
- Residential owner performing work on his or her own property (with significant restrictions)
- Other specific exemptions detailed in the statute

Even if exempt from state licensing, you may still need a local permit in Lake Mary. Verify with the Building Department.
