Engineering Licensing in De Leon Springs CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida regulates engineers under the Construction Industry Licensing Board framework. If you perform work that requires professional engineering judgment—including design, analysis, or certification of construction projects—you must hold a license under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. The specific scope depends on whether you're a Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Engineer in Training (EIT), or working under a licensed engineer's supervision. Fla. Stat. § 489.105 defines the regulated services that require licensure.

Not all engineering-related work requires a license. Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work performed by employees of public utilities, certain federal employees, and work that falls outside the legal definition of "practice of engineering."

How to Get Licensed

State Application & Exam:
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) oversees licensure through the Construction Industry Licensing Board per Fla. Stat. § 489.107. You must:

  1. Meet education requirements (typically a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program)
  2. Satisfy experience requirements (generally 4 years of work under a licensed professional engineer)
  3. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Professional Engineer (PE) exam
  4. Apply through DBPR with exam scores, education verification, and experience documentation

Military Service Credit:
Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for relevant military training and education toward licensing requirements. If you have military engineering background, document this when applying.
