This includes work on wiring, circuits, panels, fixtures, and related infrastructure. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" is defined as a person who undertakes to, offers to, or does electrical work. The scope covers both residential and commercial projects within city limits.
How to Get Licensed
Florida electrical licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To obtain a license:
-
Meet qualification requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which mandate specific years of documented work experience (typically 4 years for contractors), passage of a state examination, and proof of financial responsibility.
-
Apply through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which administers licensing on behalf of the Construction Industry Licensing Board.
-
Pass the state electrical contractor exam covering code knowledge and technical competency.
-
Provide proof of experience, documented through work records and supervisor verification.
Veterans and active-duty service members may receive credit for relevant military training and education toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131—apply this credit when submitting your application.
